Mentoring is a Cost Effective
Prevention and Intervention Strategy
In Illinois
it costs about $85,000
annually
to house one youth in a juvenile detention center
vs. approximately $1,000
a year to fund a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring
relationship.
Big Brothers Big
Sisters provides mentoring services to help youth who face
adversity beat the odds with the support of volunteers and
donors. Professional staffers carefully match children with
volunteer mentors in long-term one-to-one mentoring
relationships.
In addition, Big Brothers Big Sisters
provides ongoing professional support to volunteers,
children, and parents/caregivers throughout the life of the
match.

confident in their schoolwork performance
-
able to get
along better with their families
-
46% less
likely to begin using illegal drugs
-
27% less
likely to begin using alcohol
